Pre-moistened wipe offers 24-hour surface protection
July 13, 2021

Scott 24 disinfecting wipes are the first pre-saturated wipes that disinfect and provide 24-hour surface sanitization against bacterial even after multiple touches. This multi-touch protection kills 99.9% of bacterial when used as directed and is EPA and Health Canada approved to kill SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, the wipes leverage Kimberly-Clark’s proprietary meltblown base sheet technology treated with its own chemistry to maximize performance. The Scott 24 development process was complex and challenging. Because the EPA did not have testing protocols to approve residual claim and had to collaborate to create the correct testing protocols. The other technical challenge is that is difficult to leave an active element on a surface without leaving streaks or an unpleasant surface appearance or feel. As wipes growth continues to be driven by an elevated focus on sanitization and hygiene post pan-demic and the need to enable end users to disinfect, sanitize and clean in a more convenient, portable manner. Already a market leader in the branded B2B nonwoven wipers category, proliferation into pre-moistened wipes is a logical expansion of its portfolio. This expansion will continue. The company has a three-year innovation strategy related to this category with new formulations fueled by customer insights and increased capital investments to propel growth. K-C applied the knowledge learned in the baby wipes market—which includes a deep understanding of regulated products and how they can impact health and wellbeing – in the development Scott 24. This drove understanding on quality manufacturing processes, product safety and regulated product environments. KCP has also gained substantial knowledge in this journey by referencing its WetTask line of products – which allow end user customers to pair our substrates with their own chemicals. This product family added to our understanding of how its substrates respond to various formulations. While market demand in the pandemic environment has been volatile, K-C expects a fundamental change in people’s elevated standards and expectations for cleaning will continue indefinitely, as will an increased demand for cleaning services sparked by the pandemic. Scott 24 is one of these new wipes innovations that will vie for this year’s WOW Innovation Award. Lenzing Lycell skin fibers and The Shark VacMop are the other two finalists.
